No, this is not a haunted house. The Salem Museum of Torture is a historical museum dedicated to showcasing the cruel and unusual punishments used throughout human history. While the museum offers an immersive experience with dim lighting and sound effects, there are no sudden scares or startling moments. Our mission is to educate visitors and preserve authentic instruments of torture for historical understanding. This is not a haunted house, but a place of learning and reflection.
The museum spans two floors, with stairs required to access the lower level. However, the main exhibits are located on the fully accessible first floor. Visitors who are unable to access the lower level and wish to explore only the first floor may do so at a reduced admission rate. Please speak with our staff at the ticket counter for pricing and assistance.
Purchasing tickets in advance is not required but can be a convenient option for visitors who prefer to plan their trip ahead of time. For those who decide to purchase tickets on the day of their visit, tickets are available for sale in the museum's gift shop.
The museum is self-guided, allowing you to explore the exhibit rooms at your own pace. On average, visitors spend 30 minutes inside the museum. We encourage you to take your time and read all of the information presented throughout the dungeon halls.
Please be aware that our museum contains graphic depictions of historical violence, which some visitors may find disturbing. We strongly advise parental discretion when planning a visit with children. The exhibits are designed to provide an accurate portrayal of the harsh realities of historical punishments, and as such, they include detailed and potentially unsettling content. We recommend that parents and guardians carefully consider the maturity of their children before entering the museum.
